A vehicle crashed into a building in the Midway District the evening of Nov. 25 after its driver was shot and fatally wounded, San Diego police said.

Police received reports of gunfire and a crash at about 6:15 p.m. at Kemper Street and Kenyon Street south of Midway Drive, Officer Robert Heims said.

Officers found the driver of the crashed vehicle gravely injured with a gunshot wound to the chest and possibly one to the head, Heims said.

Medics rushed the victim to a hospital, but he later died, according to Heims, who said homicide detectives had taken over the investigation. Police said the victim was 18 to 25 years old.

Witnesses told police that at least one other vehicle sped from the scene after the shooting, but it was not immediately clear if that vehicle was involved, police said.

Lt. Matt Dobbs said in a news release that investigators believe another male was with the victim at the time of the crash. That person was seen walking away from the vehicle, according to police.

Heims said he didn’t know what building the vehicle struck. The situation unfolded behind the Point Loma Plaza shopping center.

Police encouraged anyone with information about the case to contact the homicide unit as (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
