One dead, one injured in wrong-way crash on I-8 near Ocean Beach

Two vehicles collided when a driver accelerated the wrong way onto westbound Interstate 8.
One person was killed and another was injured when two vehicles collided in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 8 near Ocean Beach late Dec. 20, authorities said.
The crash happened at about 11:25 p.m. on westbound I-8 near where the freeway ends at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.
A Subaru Outback driven by a 24-year-old Sacramento man headed east in the westbound lanes, CHP Officer Salvador Castro said in a news release. It crashed head-on into a Toyota Camry driven by a 54-year-old woman, Castro said.
The Toyota driver died at the scene. The Subaru driver suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital. Castro said the man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
One 911 caller told CHP dispatchers that there was “debris all over [the] road.”
CHP officers temporarily shut down all westbound lanes of the freeway at the Sports Arena Boulevard exit, according to the CHP log.
