A driver suspected of speeding when his vehicle struck and killed two Canadian tourists in Point Loma in January has been arrested, harbor police officials said.

Kevin Thomer, 35, was booked into jail March 3 on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, stemming from the crash that killed Jerome Zimmer, 71, and Madelyn Zimmer, 69. The crash happened Jan. 19 on North Harbor Drive west of Nimitz Boulevard.

A speeding vehicle struck and killed a man and a woman who were walking across a street the evening of Jan. 19 in Point Loma near San Diego Bay, police said.

The Zimmers, from Alberta, Canada, were crossing North Harbor Drive at about 6:05 p.m. when a speeding westbound vehicle hit them, police said. It’s unclear whether the pedestrians were in a crosswalk at the time.

They died before they could be taken to a hospital.

Thomer stayed at the site while officers investigated, police said.
