Three local schools get Purple Star for helping military families

Three schools in the Point Loma Cluster of the San Diego Unified School District were recently designated as Purple Star Schools, recognizing schools that are committed “to meeting the needs of students and their families who are connected to the military.”

The local honorees are Cabrillo Elementary, Dana Middle and Dewey Elementary schools.

California’s Purple Star Program works to provide support, create transition programs and offer staff development to military-connected students to help them maintain their academic, college and career aspirations. This is the first year of the award, which went to a total of 18 schools in San Diego County and 31 in the state.

Military-connected students must move whenever their active-duty parent or guardian receives a relocation order. Such relocations mean the children can expect to change schools six to nine times between kindergarten and 12th grade — three times more often than nonmilitary-connected children. — Point Loma-OB Monthly and The San Diego Union-Tribune
