3 men injured in exchange of gunfire at Shelter Island firepit

Three men were shot on Shelter Island the night of April 30 when an argument at a firepit escalated into a gun battle, San Diego police said.

An argument broke out among a group of people gathered at a firepit on the beach north of the Shelter Island Pier around 9 p.m. A witness told OnScene.TV that he saw a man start walking away with a backpack. Words were exchanged, and the man pulled out a gun and started shooting, the witness said.

Someone in the group also pulled out a gun and fired back, according to the witness.

A 22-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were shot, according to police. They were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said there was no threat to the public.
