A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol in a crash that killed two minivan passengers in the Midway District, San Diego police said.

Police also allege that Edgar Espinosa was driving without a license when he crashed his pickup into the center median, sending the truck into the air before it landed on top of the minivan at the intersection of Rosecrans Street and Sports Arena Boulevard at about 9 p.m. May 7.

Police said Espinosa’s 1999 Toyota Tacoma had been headed west on Sports Arena Boulevard at high speed. The minivan — a 2015 Toyota Sienna — was stopped at a red light on northbound Rosecrans.

The two minivan passengers who died were identified as Suad Alsamarai, 81, and Ahmed Mazin Salah Alrawi, 23, both of El Cajon, according to the San Diego County medical examiner’s office. They died at the scene.

The 21-year-old driver of the minivan and a 46-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Espinosa also suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. He was released May 9 and then booked into San Diego Central Jail.

Police asked anyone with information about the case to call the San Diego Police Department at (619) 531-2000 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at (888) 580-8477.
