OB Woman’s Club ping pong tournament coming Sept. 29

The Ocean Beach Woman’s Club will present its third annual “Battle for the Paddle” ping pong tournament from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29.

There will be a 32-player bracket, with a prize for the best player name and trophies for first and second place.

Player registration is $20. Spectator admission is free.

Brews and bites fundraiser to benefit Point Loma Summer Concerts

Rhythm & Brews, a fundraiser to benefit the annual Point Loma Summer Concerts series, is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at The Thursday Club, 1224 Santa Barbara St., Point Loma.

The event will feature tastings of dozens of brewed adult beverages (beer, kombucha and cider) representing nearly 20 San Diego-area breweries.

The $40 ticket includes a Jensen’s Foods homemade bratwurst or a giant pretzel with beer cheese sauce and other bites to mark Oktoberfest. Plus, each participant will receive a commemorative 5-ounce tasting glass.

A raffle for prizes also will be available, with proceeds supporting music education in local schools.

Free event will kick off S.D. Ballet season and new photography exhibit

The San Diego Ballet will kick off its new season with “Overture,” a free event from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Liberty Station in Point Loma.

Guests can meet San Diego Ballet dancers and Artistic Director Javier Velasco and watch preview performances of “Sleeping Beauty” featuring dancers from the company at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Dorothea Laub Dance Place, 2650 Truxtun Road. A Veteran Couture Fashion Show will follow each performance.

Guests also can attend the opening reception for “People Who Look Like Art,” a photography exhibit by Lorraine Triolo in the Mandell Weiss Gallery at the Dorothea Laub Dance Place. The show will run through February.

Liberty Station space available rent-free to up-and-coming dance artists

The NTC Foundation is seeking requests for proposals from up-and-coming dance artists to use a 664-square-foot working space in the Dorothea Laub Dance Place in the Arts District at Liberty Station in Point Loma.

The foundation’s Emerging Artist program is designed to help new creatives build a career in San Diego. It offers the studio space for 18 months rent-free.

Applications for studio availability from early November this year through April 2025 are being accepted until noon Sunday, Oct. 1, at ntcfoundation.org/emerging-artist. A refundable security deposit of $300 is required.

Two artist studios join Liberty Station lineup

Two new artist studios are opening in September at the Arts District at Liberty Station in Point Loma.

Janet McCarty, who has presented her work in juried shows and exhibitions all over the world, is showing pieces including abstracts, figures, Italian street paintings and more at her studio.

Meanwhile, Laurence Seredowych is a painter who has won awards for her oil works.
